Types Of Mistakes

Types Of Mistakes

We typically see mistakes as actions that need to be avoided. We sometimes forget that mistakes are not only opportunities to grow, but are at times absolutely necessary for our development. Understanding why we make different types of mistakes can help us turn them into beneficial learning opportunities.

In this blog, we’re going to explore the different types of mistakes and how we can utilise them to develop in the workplace.

Sloppy Mistakes

Sloppy mistakes are made when we do routine tasks mindlessly. They happen when we are in a rush, are feeling overwhelmed or are not paying attention to what we’re doing. Sloppy mistakes occur because we are not focused enough on the outcomes that we want to achieve.

T2 Tip: sloppy mistakes are mistakes that can be prevented and are usually caused by things that are within our control. If we have a task to complete but are feeling overwhelmed or rushed, don’t attempt the task there and then. Take five, re-focus, take back control and start again. Could you reschedule the task for a time when you have a little more headspace? Remember, a task is only worth doing if it’s done well.

Ostrich mistakes

Ostrich mistakes occur when we’ve put a significant amount effort into achieving an outcome, but for some reason, we’ve failed to achieve it and then rather than dealing with the consequences, we either move on without addressing it, or in other words, bury our heads in the sand.

T2 Tip: As uncomfortable as it may be, mistakes need to be addressed. Acknowledge you made the mistake, reflect on what happened and use it as an opportunity to learn something from it. This will reduce the chances of you doing it again.

Stalling mistakes

Stalling mistakes are mistakes of omission or inaction. They occur when we are so focused on the process that we fail to reach the desired outcome. Stalling mistakes are common amongst people who are high in perfectionism or are lacking in confidence. Perfectionists become so fixed on the details of the journey that they end up neglecting the end result, and those low in confidence don’t have the self-esteem to push their hard work over the line.

T2 Tip: this type of mistake is potentially the trickiest to avoid as the root causes are down to individual factors. If you find yourself making stalling mistakes, take a step back and consider the consequences of not achieving the outcome of a task. Sometimes done is better than perfect!

Stretch mistakes

Stretch mistakes occur when we stretch ourselves beyond our comfort zone, try something new or different and fail to get it right. Stretch mistakes are the only mistakes we shouldn’t avoid. By pushing ourselves outside of our normal limits, we are developing and progressing as a result.

In Summary: mistakes are there for us to learn from. It is inevitable that we will all make a mistake at some point in our lives. The key is to take the steps to avoid making the wrong type of mistake, and pushing ourselves towards making the mistakes that will really push us towards success.
